Why I Wrote the Book

A city l ike San Francisco encompasses the very best of us and also lays bare the
very worst of us. Corruption, thievery and shady backroom deals are more the norm than the exception. Every City and County of San Francisco department I have
worked for in the last twenty years had million dollar scams. We have accepted this type of behavior in the corporate world and now we have become complacent when
this same dishonesty and vice permeate the fabric of our public lives. San Francisco is no different than any other major American city in most ways. When a flaw is exposed
in one of our leaders, department heads, or our city workforce, we don’t act diligently to find an explanation or to separate that individual. Rather, those in power quickly circle the wagons and go into damage control. The young mother who had her arms ripped to shreds
by a Siberian tiger at the San Francisco Zoo was a victim of this institutionalized corruption, as was the dead teenager who had his head nearly ripped off by the same animal
a year later. Two young men were left to fend for themselves as their bones were crushed and the flesh ripped from their bodies as the San Francisco Zoo staff ran for cover. I wrote this book to expose the crime and corruption that underlie the fabric of our city. The senior staff of the
Zoo and their lawyers were warned the tiger grottos were not safe, long before the tiger escaped. They were told the tiger could reach through the bars, long before she did. I know this to be true because I told them. During the twenty years I spent working for the City and County
of San Francisco I repeatedly encountered the same lies, accusations, and cover-ups I now see following the death and mauling of these young men. I wrote this book to explain
how this tragedy happened, in the hope that it will not happen again.
